My 3 yr old child learned to stop and turn on skis by making a wedge using this simple, elegant trainer. What a rewarding experience to watch her skill grow during several half hour, upbeat, playful sessions. We even both skied for free at Copper Mountain on their magic carpet bunny hill! She mastered in an afternoon what took me a couple seasons when I was a kid. It’s from Colorado and this is the best made, most durable device of its type anyhere.

When you have a child who shoes interest in learning to play the guitar you want them to have this keenest rewarded with early success. I notice that children need more variation in their guitar lessons than adults. Adult guitar pupils motivate themselves and do not get bored easily. To teach children how to play guitar you will need a bit of guile and skill to keep them focussed. I use these 4 tactics to keep them interested.
They must have heard themselves play something good every lesson. When children have their first lesson you must simplify it and channel the lesson to enable them to produce something musical straight away. For a very slow or nervous learner I will play the chords in an arrangement and let the child strum.
The second tactic is what I call modeling. Many teachers will not play during a lesson. They simply instruct the music pupil what to do and expect them to do it. I always teach with a guitar in my hand to demonstrate what I want. It also gives the pupil confidence in the music teacher’s ability. There is the sense unspoken from the learner that they will play like that one day. It is a good motivator for a child learning to play any instrument.
My third tactic is to get them to experiment with the guitar very early on. I usually teach the chord of D early on because it is quite simple and you can vary it by only fingering 2 out of the 3 strings or by moving the whole basic shape up and down the fret board. This is always homework for children learning the guitar and it is the first thing I expect to hear at the next lesson.
My final tactic is to get them online to search for videos and lessons online for them to look at and copy. There are so many superb online resources for teaching children the guitar. Try these ways to teach children how to play guitar and try to give them early success.

Acoustic Guitar
A hollow body instrument with steel or nylon strings.

Learning to play a musical instrument is a tough ask for a child without having to struggle with a guitar or violin that is too big.
Pre-toddler Instruments
For babies, just something to beat or hit and music-making toys make a great place to begin. Before one year of age they will be able to get to grips with a basic beating motion, so drums, bongos or even a simple glockenspiel or xylophone will provide a vehicle for them to start making sounds. Equally useful would be a toy that rewards a task by playing a simple tune for the child – nursey rhymes are often used as they quickly become familiar. They are great for introducing pure music to pre-toddlers’ ears without other distractions. Of course, they are just modern interpretations of wind-up musical toys and music boxes, so have been proven and enjoyed by many generations already.
Toddler Tinkering
As children get older and their capacity to learn more complex things improves, it is possible that they will show some curiosity for more advanced music-making. Probably the easiest way to start is with a simple piano or keyboard as it can be played with one finger or ten. A simple two- or three-octave electronic keyboard is a low cost option, and after a brief demonstration from a grown up, kids as young as four can pick out very simple tunes or simply experiment themselves and have fun. They come in all flavours – monophonic, duophonic or polyphonic, and with banks of sounds and background beats to play to. (Remember, Mozart was writing music before he was six, so if your child has not written their first concerto by six, you’re being too soft on them.)
Starting on a guitar is a bit more tricky than the keyboard because the two hands are doing different things, and a degree of strength is required to hold chords down. For this reason guitars tend to become playable when a child reaches about six or seven. Half-size or three-quarter size guitars are no different from full-size guitars in terms of tuning or playing – they are just completely scaled down to suit a smaller player.
Tempting Your Teens Into Music
Guitars and keyboards are both perfest places to start learning music as they play both chords and melodies. As children move into their teens, they could well have been fairly accomplished players of one instrument but want to branch into other instruments. Violins and woodwind instruments can be picked up quite easily by the enthusiastic child, but if they have a love of anything from the bassoon to the tuba, a bit of decent tuition should see them on their way. Even a drum kit is not the potential nightmare at home you might first imagine. Damping pads can be placed on the heads and they will make hardly any noise but allow practice, and modern electronic kits are now so lifelike they are used by professional music schools.
The important thing is giving children the desire for music in the first place. And that can never start too soon – as many a pregnant pianist will testify!

If you’re an aspiring guitar player then there’s a couple accessories you’ll need. Luckily, not too many or too expensive. Probably the most important thing will be an acoustic guitar tuner. If your guitar isn’t in tune then anything else you do won’t sound right. You won’t know if you’re making the right chords or not and you’ll be frustrated because you don’t sound the way you want to. Lets take a look at some types of acoustic guitar tuners so you can decide what’s best for you.
Electronic Acoustic Guitar Tuners
Most electronic guitar tuners have a needle, or an LCD representation of a needle to show you whether the pitch is sharp or flat. If it is pointing dead center that means the note is in tune. If it’s to the left that means it’s flat (low), if it is to the right that means it is sharp (high). They will usually have a little scale with the notes on it, these notes highlight as you play the string. Most of them will have a green light that flashes when your string is in tune, a red light will flash to the left it it is flat, and to the right if it is sharp.
You can’t really determine the best guitar tuner, because it’s different for everyone. If you’ve just started get an electronic tuner for acoustic guitar. The pitch pipe tuners aren’t that accurate, and it’s not easy if you haven’t trained your ears on what to listen for. Because you’ll be tuning an acoustic guitar you’ll need one with a built in microphone, which all of them should have. I’ve never seen one without one. Probably the best one for beginners is the acoustic guitar auto tuner. Calibrated for the strings on a standard guitar. All you need to do is play it note, it recognizes it and tells you whether or not it is sharp or flat. You don’t need to know about the musical scale it will only recognize the notes of the open guitar strings.
Clip on Guitar Tuner
Another type of tuner for acoustic guitar is the clip on tuner. This doesn’t have a built in microphone, but it doesn’t need one. It clips on the head of your guitar and recognizes what note you play by the vibrations that it picks up. It’s very useful when trying to tune in a loud room. Many of the microphone tuners will be thrown off by other noises. The clip on is also nice because you can leave it clipped to your guitar in case you want to check it periodically. It also works for an electric guitar, which is an added bonus.
